R&D Trade Assistants

The Role
We are seeking experienced Trade Assistants to support Licensed Gas Fitters and Mechanical Trades at a cutting-edge R&D facility in Melbourne's inner west.
This is a unique opportunity to work with emerging technologies, contributing to the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of advanced gas infrastructure and steel smelting systems. It's a hands-on role ideal for someone who thrives in technical environments and takes pride in maintaining safe, efficient site operations.
Key Responsibilities
- Support gas and mechanical trades in daily site operations
- Prepare and maintain clean, safe, and organised work areas
- Operate forklifts and assist with material and equipment handling
- Use hand and power tools to assemble and install components
- Measure, cut, bend, thread, and assemble stainless and mild steel tube and pipe
- Interpret and work from isometric and P&ID drawings
- Assist with equipment positioning and installation
- Liaise with engineers, technicians, and suppliers regarding design, testing, and parts
- Update and mark up technical drawings as required
- Support commissioning and testing activities
This role includes intermittent rostered shift work for short periods (up to two weeks at a time) during 24/5 or 24/7 R&D smelter operational trials.
About You
Highly regarded:
- Forklift Licence
- Dogging High Risk Work Licence
- Experience within steel smelting environments (e.g. blast furnace, arc furnace, casting)
- Background in engineering, fabrication, or heavy industry
You are reliable, safety-focused, and enjoy working as part of a collaborative team in a fast-paced, evolving environment.
